Routine Traffic Check Leads To Arrest
A 33-year-old man from the municipality of Câmara de Lobos was arrested on May 7 for drug trafficking and disobedience. The arrest was made by the local police during a routine traffic check. The man was found driving, despite being prohibited from doing so for 48 hours, due to a previous positive drug test. Upon inspection, he was found in possession of 198 doses of hashish, and a precision scale, leading to charges for both offenses.

While hashish decriminalization is gaining traction worldwide and its consumption might just not be the problem, Câmara de Lobos remains in the spotlight for drug-related incidents, in particular regarding synthetic drugs imported from abroad. A recent CNN Portugal documentary shed light on drug abuse and drug trade in Madeira, focusing on the picturesque and former fishing village. Despite progress, the community still grapples with structural changes and residents reliant on state subsidies.
