Media Leaves Out Key Aspects of Fatal Dubai Madeira Accident

A fatal accident occurred at the 300 million Dubai Madeira construction site in Funchal. Major private media reported a deadly accident but did not mention the site, its location, or use conclusive imagery.

Man Falls from Fifth Floor at Dubai Madeira Construction Site

Have you heard about last week's fatal accident at the Dubai Madeira construction site? Despite the severity of the incident, it has received limited media coverage. Only RTP Madeira - state media - explicitly mentioned that the accident occurred at the Dubai Madeira construction site, while private media outlets left out key details. The victim, a man, according to sources, between 50 and 64 years old, fell from the fifth floor of what is Funchal’s largest ongoing construction project. He later died of his injuries at the hospital.

Private Media Does Not Mention Dubai Madeira

Both JM-Madeira and Diário de Notícias da Madeira reported on the fatal incident. Hours after RTP Madeira reported key details of the incident, JM displayed a stock photo of a construction worker holding a helmet, while Diário used an image of Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça.

Further on, neither outlet explicitly mentioned the Dubai Madeira development. Instead, the latter refers vaguely to a “construction site on Rua Velha da Ajuda” in Funchal, with JM merely describing it as "a construction site in Funchal."

Conflict of Interests or Lack of Interest?

Diário de Notícias da Madeira is 77% owned by Grupo Sousa. Dubai Madeira is a €300 million luxury project by Varino Investimentos, a joint venture of Socicorreia and AFA Group (owned by Avelino Farinha). In 2019, AFA Group acquired 50.5% of EJM, owner of Rádio JM and Jornal da Madeira.

According to unconfirmed sources, the worker was of Madeiran descent.
