Medical Consultation Fees Rise to €65

After remaining stable for 15 years, medical consultation fees in Madeira rose to €60 last year, increased to €65 this December, and are set to rise to €70 in 12 months.

October 2024 Agreement Sets €65 Fee From December

Specialist medical consultations in Madeira now cost €65 under an agreement signed in October 2024 between the Regional Government and the Ordem dos Médicos. The second phase of the plan began on December 1, 2025, raising the official price from €60 to €65 for patients who use doctors under contract with the public system.

The agreement applies to about 685 specialist doctors working under protocol with the regional health service. Patients pay the full amount upfront and later receive a partial repayment through IASaúde, the public reimbursement system of Madeira.

Special Card Holders Get Up to €30 From December 2025

Patients with the Special Reimbursement Card receive higher repayments. From this month, IASaúde pays €30 to patients in Category A and €28.13 to those in Category B.

  • Category A includes pensioners with income no higher than the regional minimum wage who are also exempt from income tax.

  • Category B includes beneficiaries with income below the same threshold who are registered under the regional social support system.

Before the December 2025 change, repayments for these groups were €27.50 for Category A and €25.63 for Category B.

70-Euro Fee Planned for December 1, 2026 Under Same Deal

The agreement also sets a final update for December 1, 2026, when the price of a specialist visit will rise to €70. At that stage, the standard repayment will be €18.25, leaving patients with a final cost of €51.75.+

Last Fee Increase Took Place in 2008 and Lasted 15 Years

The last formal price update before this agreement had been in 2008, when a government resolution took the fee from €50 to €55. That price stayed unchanged for about 15 years until the current three-step revision plan was approved in 2024.

Around half of Madeira’s doctors remain within the public agreement, according to regional figures. In total, the region has about 1,420 registered doctors, with nearly 685 under contract to the system. By contrast, prices on mainland Portugal are not controlled and specialist appointments can reach €150, with no public repayment.
