In the Autonomous Region of Madeira, the Islamic Cultural Center of Madeira was recently established, based in Santa Cruz, with its own statutes. Its objectives include, among other events and activities, promoting and facilitating the practice of Islamic worship and religious activities; organizing Islamic education programs; and promoting the acquisition of properties with a view to constructing mosques that meet the religious, educational, and social needs of the Muslim community

In an official press release, municipal authorities of Santa Cruz stated that:
In its statement, the municipality clarified that no project, intention, or proposal related to the creation of an Islamic center has been submitted or licensed.
They also reminded residents that the registration of companies or associations does not require municipal authorization, as this matter falls outside the City Council’s legal duties.
Misinformation on Social Media Prompted the Municipal Response: “Completely False”
According to the statement, the city’s response came after several unverified posts circulated online, alleging that a religious center for the Islamic community was being developed in Santa Cruz. These rumors gained traction quickly, prompting confusion among residents.
The City Hall explained that such claims were “completely false” and stressed the importance of confirming information through official sources before sharing it online. Local officials reiterated that their goal is to prevent unnecessary tension and preserve public trust.
Finally, the City Hall regretted that “lies and unfounded accusations are being used to sow fear and misinformation,” reaffirming its commitment to truth, transparency, and respect for democratic coexistence.

In its communication, the municipal executive highlighted that Santa Cruz, like all municipalities in Madeira, is home to people of different nationalities and beliefs.
The statement reaffirmed that Madeira operates under the constitutional principle of religious freedom, which allows everyone to freely practice their faith.
Authorities emphasized that the municipality has no restrictions or biases regarding religion, and that community harmony depends on respect and understanding among residents.
