9,100 People Out of Work, as Unemployment Rate Increases to 6.7%
Madeira registered 9,100 unemployed people in the first three months of 2025 — a 12.6% increase compared to the same period last year. The data was released by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) on Wednesday. The unemployment rate now stands at 6.7%. That is 0.8 percentage points higher than a year ago.
Activity Rate Shows Slight Decline Over the Year
The share of the working-age population (aged 16 to 89) that is either working or seeking work was 60.6% in early 2025. This is 0.9 percentage points lower than in the first quarter of 2024, but 0.9 points higher than in the last quarter of that year. Looking at gender, the numbers show a gap: 64.8% of men were active in the labor market, compared to just 57.0% of women.
Employment Numbers Reach Near-Record Levels
The total number of employed people in Madeira reached 127,200 - a slight drop of 0.1% compared to early 2024 but an increase of 1.8% from the previous quarter. Among those working:
3,300 were underemployed, working part-time but wanting more hours.
6,700 held a second job.
17,700 worked from home, including 15.8% of employed women and 12.1% of employed men.
Active Population Reaches Highest Level Ever Recorded
Madeira’s active population, which includes both the employed and those looking for work, grew to 136,300 - the highest number ever recorded by DREM. This is up 0.6% from a year ago.
The inactive population — those not working and not seeking work — was estimated at 124,200. That’s 2.7% more than in early 2024.
