Pico do Arieiro Falls to –0.3°C in First Freeze of the Year

Temperatures have dropped sharply, and Pico do Arieiro recorded its first night below zero this year.

Madeira recorded its first below-zero air temperature of this autumn and winter early on Thursday, December 4. According to data from the Pico do Arieiro station, the region’s highest point in the IPMA network, the temperature reached –0.3°C at 04:00. Rainfall during the night stayed under 1 mm at the same station. Around midnight, the air temperature was still near 3°C, which was not cold enough for snow to form.

Funchal Experiences Its Coldest Night of the New Meteorological Winter With 15.3°C

The night in Funchal was also the coldest so far this meteorological winter in Funchal, which began on December 1. The local observatory recorded a minimum of 15.3°C at 07:40. This drop followed a period of mild evenings earlier in the week, but the cooler air reached several parts of the island.

Intermediate Areas See Air Temperatures Fall Below 10°C at Monte and Santo da Serra

At mid-altitudes, air temperatures slipped into single digits. Monte registered 9.2°C, while Santo da Serra measured 9.1°C. Other areas stayed just above that threshold, including Quinta Grande at 10.5°C, Prazeres at 10.2°C and Santana at 10.4°C.

Funchal/Lido Records the Warmest Minimum of the Night with 16.4°C

While higher and mid-altitude stations cooled sharply, the warmest minimum temperature came from Funchal/Lido, where the night stayed at 16.4°C. This contrast between coastal and elevated areas is common in Madeira, but the difference was especially clear during this first cold night of the season.
