A 24-year-old police officer was seriously injured after being stabbed multiple times during a traditional festival in Ribeira Brava, Madeira. The attack happened early on Saturday morning during the São Pedro celebrations, an event that attracts many locals and tourists. The officer, currently working in Lisbon, was on holiday at the time.
According to Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã, the incident took place around 3:40 a.m. The officer was reportedly stabbed seven times - one of the wounds punctured a lung. He was first taken to a local health center and later transferred to the main hospital in Funchal. After surgery, his condition has stabilized, though he remains under close observation in intensive care.
Suspect Identified on Scene, Motive Still Unknown
The suspect, a 22-year-old man living in the region, was identified by officers from the Câmara de Lobos division of the Public Security Police (PSP). The case is now under investigation by the Polícia Judiciária, who are responsible for serious crimes. Authorities have not yet confirmed the reason behind the attack, but early information suggests the officer may have been drugged before being taken to another location, where he was assaulted.
The suspect is expected to appear in court on Monday, where he may face charges of attempted murder. If needed, a judge will be available on Tuesday, which is a public holiday in Portugal.
Local Government Responds to Incident
The Ribeira Brava City Council released a statement expressing sadness about the attack. In their message, officials wished the officer a quick recovery and highlighted that the festival had been planned carefully with support from the police, firefighters, maritime authorities, and other safety teams.
Unfortunately, these are situations that happen (…) We prepared this festival to offer people a celebration with good music, food, and traditions.
Medical Care and Ongoing Recovery
The injured officer was operated on Saturday, and the surgery went smoothly. Although he is no longer in critical danger, doctors have given a cautious outlook for the next few days. He will remain in Madeira for the time being as he recovers.
Local media, including JM and Correio da Manhã, report that the officer may have been targeted as part of a premeditated attack involving a group. Investigators continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
