Polish officials are following the search for the missing Igor Holewiński, as his family calls for experienced hikers to help with the rescue operation in the coming days.

Five Portuguese Security Forces Lead Search for Igor Holewiński, Says Polish Consul

The search for missing Polish tourist Igor Holewiński continues in the mountains of Madeira, with five Portuguese security forces involved, according to Rafał Budyta, Poland’s consul in Lisbon. Budyta told Polskie Radio that Polish diplomats are “in constant contact with the local police” as the operation progresses.

Local authorities, including police and civil protection units, have been searching rugged terrain near the island’s central peaks, where Holewiński was last seen on Sunday, November 2.

Last Signal Detected Near Levada dos Tornos Before Phone Went Silent

Holewiński’s sister, Olga Holewińska, told Portuguese media that her brother set off alone early Sunday morning, possibly after spending the night in São Vicente. He planned to hike toward Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest mountain, and continue to Santana.

“The last cell signal was detected near the Levada dos Tornos and then remained static for hours,” she said. Search teams have since focused on that section of the trail network, known for its steep and forested paths.

Polish Rescuers to Join Search Operation From November 8 to 11

In a message shared on social media, Holewiński’s family and friends said Polish mountain rescuers are traveling to Madeira to assist local authorities.

We are looking for experienced guides who could support rescue efforts from polish rescuers, who are on the way to Madeira and will be cooperating with police to support local authorities. The search is going to start tomorrow (8.11 Saturday) and continue until tuesday (11.11).
