Porto Moniz Builds Public Animal Shelter

The space will have a maximum capacity of 50 animals and accomodate both cats and dogs. The city government expects it to open in less than one year.

Construction Began After Earlier Promise and Aims for Late-Summer 2026 Launch

The municipality of Porto Moniz has begun building its first official animal collection center, a project first promised by the previous local administration.

According to the current president, Olavo Câmara (PS), the new facility should open at the end of next summer. Heavy machinery is already on site. Mr. Câmara said the project fulfils both a legal duty and a local need.

It is a necessity, and also almost a legal obligation.

He stated. He added that earlier discussions about a joint center with other municipalities never moved forward, so the council chose to proceed alone.

Porto Moniz will soon have an official animal shelter

Facility Designed With 540 Square Meters and Two Distinct Service Areas

The center is being built next to the municipal warehouse on the Caminho da FajĂŁ dos Boios, covering about 540 square meters. Municipal officials describe a structure divided into two main areas.

One area will host veterinary services, including:

  • treatment rooms

  • a pharmacy space

  • rooms for surgery

  • storage space for equipment

The second area will focus on animal accommodation. It will include a cat section with 4 boxes, one prepared to receive litters, and a dog section with 20 boxes and outdoor areas so animals can move securely and with comfort.

Project Budget Set at 356,000 Euros From Municipal Funds

The new center represents an investment of 356,000 euros from the Porto Moniz municipal budget. The council says the project already has approval from both the national and regional veterinary authorities. This clearance allows construction to continue on schedule toward the planned 2026 opening.

Mayor Olavo Câmara emphasized during the project presentation that this work "responds to a current challenge and a legal obligation that the municipality has long needed to fulfill.

Free Veterinary Support Planned for All Large Animals in the Municipality

Once the new center opens, all large animals in the municipality will have access to free veterinary support. The facility will be managed by a veterinarian, who will oversee care for animals brought to the site and coordinate the new services.

The council says the center will help organize local animal care in a more structured and lawful way, while also giving owners of large animals a service they did not have before.
