Portugal Calls For Intensifying Ukraine Military Aid

In a recent statement, the Portuguese Foreign Minister highlighted Portugal's dedication to supporting Ukraine, particularly in terms of military aid. Portugal is actively engaged in various initiatives to provide assistance, including the manufacturing of components such as drones by private companies within Portugal. The urgent focus lies on supplying weapons, especially air and anti-aircraft capabilities, to Ukraine.

Financial Aid and Bilateral Cooperation

The Portuguese government has allocated 100 million euros towards the Czech initiative to procure ammunition for Ukraine. Additionally, efforts for bilateral agreements on military cooperation with Ukraine are underway, with negotiations expected to conclude by July. Portugal is open to considering participation in the German initiative to reinforce Ukraine's air defenses.

Discussion at the EU Ministerial Meeting

At a meeting of EU Foreign and Defense Ministers, the urgent calls from Ukrainian President Zelensky for enhanced deployment of anti-aerial systems were discussed. Ukrainian officials participated via videoconference, emphasizing the critical need for anti-air capabilities. The EU is also planning to implement a new package of sanctions against Russia in response to the full/scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Request for Allied Support

Kyiv has requested support from allies, including the EU, akin to that provided to Israel in recent events. The meeting in Luxembourg addressed the Czech initiative aimed at mobilizing funds for artillery munitions for Ukraine. Trades for over 200,000 rounds have been finalized, with delivery expected in early June, indicating ongoing efforts to strengthen support for Ukraine amidst Russian attacks on its cities and infrastructure.
