Certification Drive Aims to Strengthen Madeira’s Culinary Identity and Reputation
Around 5,800 individuals and businesses have sought to obtain the Produto da Madeira certification. The certification is granted to products that meet specific criteria related to origin, quality, and tradition, according to Madeira’s Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Fisheries, Nuno Maciel
Maciel described the process as “simple but demanding,” involving several stages of recognition and verification. Products must be produced in Madeira, be used preferentially in menus, and respect local traditions and gastronomy. The certification is overseen by the Regional Directorate’s team, which ensures compliance.
Linking Local Products to Tourism and Tradition
Maciel said that certifying regional products strengthens Madeira’s image as a destination, while protecting its culinary traditions. He stressed that authenticity attracts both locals and visitors, supporting sustainable tourism.
For certification, all production must use products from the Autonomous Region of Madeira, preferably in their blends, while also respecting local traditions and gastronomy. Nuno Maciel also emphasizes that certifying regional products is important because it contributes to enhancing Madeira as a destination.

Example: Produto da Madeira Certification Process
Let's take the example of a local honey producer who wants to get the "Produto da Madeira" certification for their honey. Here is a simplified B2-level explanation of the process:
1. Registration and Eligibility
The producer reviews if their product (honey) is listed in the official documents that define which products can get the certification.
The producer has to be officially registered as a beekeeper and have a licensed honey facility.
2. Application
The application can be made in person at the office of the Direção Regional de Agricultura, or by sending an email to produtodamadeira.srap@madeira.gov.pt.
The producer needs to provide:
Identification document (citizen card or identity card)
Proof of registration as a beekeeper
Proof of licensing for honey production
3. Verification
The authorities check if all conditions are met — for example, if the honey really comes from Madeira and if the facility follows all legal rules.
4. Approval
If everything is correct, approval usually comes within a week.
5. Rights and Publicity
Once approved, the producer can put the "Produto da Madeira" logo on their honey jars to show it is a true product from Madeira.
The certification is voluntary and free of charge.
6. Maintenance
The producer must continue to meet all requirements to keep the certification.
