PSP Conducts Large-Scale Road Inspection in Funchal

PSP conducted a large-scale nighttime traffic operation, blocking the via rápida. The focus was on alcohol consumption, leading to 12 arrests and 14 fines. Police stress road safety as Madeira has the second highest traffic-related death toll in Portugal.

Police Close Expressway for Nighttime Traffic Operation

In a large-scale road inspection, the Public Security Police (PSP) blocked both directions of the via rapida last night, redirecting drivers to the São Martinho area for checks. The operation, focused mainly on alcohol consumption, led to 12 arrests and 14 fines, and a total of 400 vehicles were checked.

35 Officers and 12 Vehicles Deployed

The inspection, which took place between 01:30h and 03:30h, involved 35 police officers and 12 vehicles. According to Sub-Intendant Dário Sanguedo, such operations are not very common but are an important part of ensuring road safety. The initiative is also part of a broader campaign planned for the Carnival season.

Planning and Coordination Key to Success

Sanguedo explained that the operation was carefully prepared over two to three weeks. The PSP Regional Command is expected to release full details of the operation in the coming days. As recently reported, Madeira has the second highest traffic-related death toll in Portugal. The police thus emphasize that these efforts aim to reduce reckless driving and ensure safer roads, particularly during festive periods when risky behavior tends to increase.
