Young Dogs Found in a Box Beside Trash Container
Several puppies were discovered abandoned inside a box placed next to a garbage container in Caniço, in the Serralhal area. The case was made public this morning by the animal protection group CRO Santa Cruz.
A local resident who found the animals took them to the association, which is now caring for them. The number of puppies has not been confirmed, but they were described as still very young.
CRO Santa Cruz Asks Those Responsible to Come Forward
CRO Santa Cruz expressed concern about the situation in a statement posted on Facebook. The organization has called for more responsible behavior from pet owners in order to avoid similar cases. In its message, the association stressed the need to prevent repeated abandonments and for the owner of the puppies mother to come forward.
The dogs are safe thanks to those who did not remain indifferent and brought them to us. If you are the owner of the mother of these puppies, we ask you to please contact us so we can help with her sterilization and prevent another litter from ending this way.

Broader Issue of Abandoned Animals
Animal abandonment remains a persistent problem across Madeira. Local groups often highlight the lack of sterilization and awareness as key factors behind the recurring appearance of unwanted litters.
CRO Santa Cruz and other associations rely heavily on volunteers and donations to provide care, shelter, and medical attention for animals left without homes. Cases such as the one in Caniço underline the continuing challenge faced by these organizations.
Call for Responsible Pet Ownership
Animal protection groups in the region continue to remind owners about the importance of sterilizing their pets. They emphasize that preventing new litters is essential to reduce abandonment and to protect animal welfare.
