New 30-Space Parking Lot and Bus Access Improve Visitor Flow

To support the increasing number of visitors, the municipality recently built a new parking area with more than 30 spaces and bus access. The mayor described the development as “very necessary,” citing the high number of vehicles arriving daily.

Daily Operation and Regular Maintenance Keep Service Reliable

The Rocha do Navio cable car operates every day, and maintenance remains a key priority for the municipality. Fernandes explained that regular servicing is done to ensure safety and reliability:

We have a cable car with all maintenance up to date. Not long ago, the cables were tightened and lubricated. Other necessary maintenance work was also carried out. We have a maintenance contract.

The mayor also mentioned that the local council is considering two options to manage operations more effectively - hiring additional staff or closing on Mondays for maintenance.

Ticket Price Remains at €8 for Round Trip Serving Tourists and Farmers

Each round-trip ticket costs €8. Besides serving tourists, the cable car also plays a vital role for local farmers working in the Fajã da Rocha do Navio, a small agricultural area that forms part of Madeira’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
