São Vicente Launches New Tourist Tax in April

São Vicente Launches New Tourist Tax in April

São Vicente will introduce a tourist tax in April, leaving just one of Madeira’s 11 municipalities without a current or planned tax.

Municipality to Charge €2 Per Night from April 2026 for Visitors

Starting in April, São Vicente will introduce a tourist tax of €2 per night, exempting children under 12. This measure makes the municipality the 10th out of 11 in Madeira to implement such a tax. The tourist tax proposed by the PSD during its campaign for the São Vicente Town Council, Chega voted in favor back in November 2025.

Tax Aims to Fund Local Infrastructure and Tourist Sites

According to local officials, the funds will support projects such as the restoration of viewpoints, maintenance of hiking trails, and improvements in urban hygiene.

So even in the town council meeting, if I remember correctly in November, we voted in favor. We support the tourist tax because it is a tax, a strategic and structural revenue for our municipality.

São Vicente Still Without an Approved 2026 Budget

As of January 2026, the town council has not yet approved its 2026 budget, the only municipality in Madeira still pending approval. Officials acknowledge this delay creates uncertainty over the management of public funds and may affect key structural investments. The expected budget for the year is approximately €12 million.
