Irish Citizen Dies After Attempting to Rescue Teen at Praia da Maiata
A 44-year-old Irish man died this Saturday afternoon after being pulled from the sea at Praia da Maiata, in Porto da Cruz (Machico municipality). According to the Machico Municipal Firefighters, the alert was received at 14:55, reporting two people in distress in the water.
Emergency services were immediately activated. A SANAS rescue boat, being closest to the area, arrived first and located the man unresponsive in the water. Crews performed basic life support and resuscitation efforts, but unfortunately could not revive him. The body was transferred to the Santa Cruz Lifeboat Station, where death was confirmed by a health delegate.
Attempt to Save a 14-Year-Old Girl, Who Presumably Was His Daughter
Commander Bruno Teles, head of the Madeira Maritime Zone, told Diário de NotĂcias that the man had entered the water in an attempt to help a 14-year-old girl who was struggling in the sea. “The teenager was rescued with the help of a buoy, apparently by bystanders,” he explained.
Authorities believe, though pending official confirmation, that the two are father and daughter.
"Subject to confirmation, everything leads us to believe" that it is a father and daughter, reports the commander of the Madeira Maritime Zone.

Daughter Safe, Taken to Hospital for Psychological Care
The girl was safely brought to shore and treated by Machico firefighters before being transported to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital in Funchal for psychological support following the tragedy.
Authorities Urge Caution Along Madeira’s Coast
Commander Teles issued a warning to residents and visitors, noting that Madeira is entering the winter sea season, when Atlantic conditions become especially dangerous.
We are entering the winter season, the sea has a lot of energy and it is very important that people take care along the shore.
