Red Flag Raised After Sightings
Swimming was temporarily banned at Ribeira Brava beach on Friday after sharks were seen near the shore. Authorities raised the red flag in the early afternoon, signaling that entering the water was not allowed. The measure followed reports from beachgoers who noticed fins close to the bathing area.
Harmless Sharks Near Swimmers
According to witnesses, a small group of “caneja” sharks was moving inside the swimming zone. These sharks are considered harmless, but their presence was enough for lifeguards to take precautions. The dorsal fins could be seen breaking the surface of the water, which quickly alerted both swimmers and safety officials.
Officials Respond Quickly
The red flag was raised to ensure safety and prevent swimmers from entering the water. Authorities confirmed the decision was taken as a preventive measure.
Normal Conditions Expected to Resume
The sharks usually pass through coastal waters without staying for long. Ribeira Brava beach remains open for visitors on land, while officials continue to monitor the sea conditions.
