Tourist Laughs at Being Ripped-Off at Mercado dos Lavradores

Reputation under fire: Madeira is once again being ridiculed as a viral TikTok shows a tourist at Madeira’s Mercado dos Lavradores laughing to tears and rolling on the floor after being charged a staggering €72 for a few pieces of fruit.

Viral Video Gains Hundred Thousands of Views in Four Days

A group of spanish speaking visitors at Madeira’s Mercado dos Lavradores say they were charged €72 for a tiny selection of fruit, including dates, mangoes, and bananas. The video, posted four days ago on social media by the account Flamanteshopp and is close to receiving a million views on TikTok, thus arguably becoming one of the island’s most discussed clips this week.

Damn, that’s insane. How am I supposed to react to that, man?

The group can not stop laughing at the ridiculous prices, with one woman exclaiming,

What did I tell you? A hundred bucks? I was sure of it.

..as they recount paying what they describe as an unexpectedly high price for “half a dozen” pieces of fruit.

Tourists Laugh at Being Ripped Off in Madeira

€72 Fruit Purchase Ridicules Madeira’s Reputation

The short clip shows the tourists reviewing their purchase — four dates, two mangoes, five bananas, and two other pieces of fruit. One of them seems unsurprised, saying she expected the high price, while another laughs so hard she ends up on the floor, unable to believe they had really paid that much.

  • “How much? Could you repeat that, please?”

  • “72 euros.” (Laughing to tears while roling on the floor)

  • “What did I tell you? A hundred bucks? I was sure of it.”

Legit Vendors and Businesses in Madeira Are Paying the Ultimate Price

This kind of pricing happens on a daily basis at one of Funchal’s best-known attractions and ridicules both the island and fair trade practices. With vendors being charged up to €5,000 monthly for their stalls, the problem is homemade, thus no one really cares.

At best, the Mercado dos Lavradores is a place that most blatantly overcharges visitors, making tourists wary and on alert to keep their money in their pockets knowing that they don’t want to encounter another rip off. Which is unfortunate, as these practices do not reflect the general attitude of entrepreneurs, vendors or businesses in Madeira.

Yet, it is them who are paying the ultimate price!
