Vandalism: Security Gate Torn Down on PR1

Early this morning, the IFCN discovered that the security gate blocking the PR1 Vereda do Areeiro trail had been torn down, forcing a temporary closure for safety.

Vandalism Detected Early This Morning by IFCN, Trail Temporarily Closed for Safety

The Instituto das Florestas e Conservação da Natureza (IFCN) reported that the security gate restricting access to the PR1 – Vereda do Arieiro trail was forcibly removed in the early hours of September 27, 2025 - world tourism day. The gate was found thrown down the slope, prompting the institute to close the trail temporarily and redirect any hikers from the area.

President of IFCN Highlights Safety Risks of Ignoring Trail Restrictions

Manuel Filipe, president of IFCN, expressed concern over the incident, saying that the gate was installed to protect hikers.

This type of behavior puts at risk not only the work of IFCN teams but above all the safety of those who use our recommended trails

The trail, which connects Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo, has been partially closed following last years devastating wildfires and until today remains closed for recovery and maintenance, with no scheduled date for reopening.

Technical Assessments Underpin Trail Closures, According to IFCN

Filipe explained that trail closures follow strict technical evaluations rather than arbitrary decisions. He urged the public to respect these measures to avoid serious accidents:

It is essential that everyone understands the importance of following the safety rules and recommendations issued by the IFCN

The institute plans increased monitoring in the coming days to prevent further violations.

IFCN Calls for Civic Responsibility as Gate Removed from Slope

The security gate has now been recovered from the slope, but IFCN continues to call on hikers to act responsibly. Officials stress that maintaining the safety and integrity of Madeira’s trails requires both individual care and collective civility, particularly during periods of trail repair and recovery.
