Why Are Palms at Praia Formosa Left to Die?

Why Are Palms at Praia Formosa Left to Die?

Funchal’s Praia Formosa promenade welcomes visitors with dozens of dried and dying plants, left to decay for no apparent reason - a meaningful and costly investment going to waste, despite the installation of an extensive irrigation network. Why?

A Showcase Project Slowly Being Wasted

About two years ago, the Praia Formosa promenade was extended and renovated. As part of this facelift, dozens of plants were added, including young palms and banana trees. An extensive irrigation system, stretching over several kilometres, was also installed to support their growth.

Even without exact figures, it is clear this was a significant investment that must have cost a considerable amount of money.

From Beauty to Decline

What began as a beautiful and promising project has slowly turned into a sad and desperate sight. The irrigation system is clearly not maintained and appears to be out of service for a very long time. As a result, the surrounding palms, plants, and banana trees are drying out and dying.

With each visit, the decline becomes more visible. Today, many of the plants are in a terrible condition, and some have already died.

A Question of Responsibility

Why this apparent and senseless act of mismanagement?

Who invested in this project, and how can such neglect happen in a place visited daily by thousands of people? Since the promenade is a public space, is it safe to assume that all of it was paid for with taxpayer money?

It feels senseless and sheds a terrible sight on one of Funchals prime locations. It is difficult to understand why for at least a year, no one seems to take responsibility or take action to improve things.
