Pico do Arieiro experienced intense rainfall this Sunday, the last full day of summer 2025. At Pico do Arieiro, 11.1 millimeters of rain fell within a single hour, meeting the threshold for a yellow weather alert from the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA). The showers concentrated on elevated areas and along the island’s north coast, but also reached Porto Santo.
Rainfall Totals by Midday Show 15 Millimeters at Pico do Arieiro and 10.7 in Chão do Areeiro
According to official data released up to noon, the highest daily accumulation occurred at Pico do Arieiro, with 15 millimeters of rain. Other affected areas included Chão do Areeiro with 10.7 millimeters, Santana with 10.1, and Santo da Serra with 9.3.
Showers Concentrated in Northern Slopes and Mountainous Terrain
Meteorologists noted that the rainfall was not widespread but focused on higher terrain and northern slopes. These regions are often more exposed to Atlantic weather systems that bring quick and heavy showers. The IPMA explained that such conditions are common at the end of summer, when humid air masses interact with Madeira’s steep geography.
Autumn Equinox Scheduled for 19:20 on Monday, September 22, Starting the New Season
The rainy Sunday also coincided with the last full day of summer. Astronomically, autumn will begin with the equinox at 19:20 local time on Monday, September 22. This event, which happens twice each year, marks the moment when day and night are nearly equal in length.
