Assaults on Foreigners: Police Identify Four Young Men

Four local men have been identified by Funchal police in connection with assaults and robberies targeting foreign nationals. Authorities continue investigations and ask victims to come forward.

Four Local Suspects Identified After Attacks in the City Center

The Public Security Police (PSP) in Funchal are investigating a series of recent assaults and robberies against foreign nationals. Four suspects, all local residents, have been identified in connection with at least two incidents that took place on May 3 and June 9. Both cases involved foreign victims and happened in busy areas of Madeira’s capital.

Violence Caught on Camera Raises Public Concern

Videos shared on social media helped police connect the same group of suspects to other possible crimes in central Funchal. One widely shared video shows foreign citizens being attacked near Avenida Sá Carneiro. Police say these images led them to uncover more signs of physical violence and confirmed the same suspects were involved. Authorities are now working to find and identify other possible victims who have not yet come forward.

In the video, one of the young men appears with a bloodied face and a deep cut on his cheek. Both complained of having been assaulted and claimed that a member of the group was armed with a knife.

Nepalese Man Stabbed in Attempted Robbery

One of the victims is a 37-year-old man from Nepal who was stabbed during an attempted robbery on Avenida do Mar in the evening hours of June 9. He was taken to the hospital with a deep cut on one arm. This attack, along with others, has raised questions about safety for foreigners in tourist areas of Funchal.

Foreign Victims Seen Bleeding in Viral Beach Video

Another video, shared earlier this month, shows two young men - believed to be from Nepal - bleeding and hurt on a beach in Funchal. According to their statements, they were robbed at knifepoint by a group of four. A British tourist who witnessed the attack reported the incident and offered to speak with the police. PSP confirmed that this was treated as a case of physical assault, although the victims chose not to file an official complaint.

Further steps are underway to identify the remaining victims and to determine the nature of the crime in the corresponding criminal complaint.
