Bus Strike in Funchal Called Off After Agreement

Bus Strike in Funchal Called Off After Agreement

The strike by Horários do Funchal staff, planned for two days, was cancelled when workers agreed to the company’s proposal during a union meeting this evening.

Workers Accept Company’s Proposal

The strike planned by employees of Horários do Funchal, the main public bus operator in Madeira, has been called off. The decision was taken this evening after a meeting of workers, who chose to accept the proposal presented by the company.

The announcement was confirmed to local media by Manuel Oliveira of the National Union of Drivers and Other Workers (SNMOT). He explained that the final decision was made collectively in a plenary session held this evening.

A Dispute Close to Disruption

The strike had been scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, threatening to affect bus services across the region. Horários do Funchal is a key provider of public transportation in Madeira, serving both residents and visitors. Any disruption would likely have caused significant inconvenience in the capital and surrounding areas.

Talks between the company’s management and the union began earlier this month. On September 8, Horários do Funchal presented a proposal, but no immediate agreement was reached. The union decided at that time not to commit until workers could vote directly on the terms.

Union Confirms Workers’ Choice

Union representative Manuel Oliveira emphasized that the decision was left to the workers themselves.

This approach led to today’s plenary, where employees voted in favor of accepting the offer. With this outcome, the strike is officially cancelled, and services are expected to continue normally.

Terms of Agreement Have Not Yet Been Disclosed

While details of the agreement have not been disclosed, the decision ends the immediate risk of a two-day strike. The resolution highlights the importance of direct consultation with workers in labor disputes. For passengers in Funchal, buses will run as usual starting tomorrow, avoiding what could have been a major disruption to daily life on the island.
