IPMA Issues Orange Weather Warning from 00:00 to 06:00 on January 1
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued an orange weather warning for heavy rain in effect from 00:00 to 06:00 on January 1. A preceding yellow alert will cover the hours leading up to the fireworks display. Authorities are monitoring weather conditions closely and may adjust plans if necessary to ensure public safety.
The New Year's Eve spectacle in Madeira may be under threat. At issue is a depression that the IPMA (Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere) has just named Francis. Rain, wind, and rough seas could replace the celebrations and the much-anticipated fireworks display.
Strong Winds up to 80 km/h Expected Across Madeira’s South Coast
In addition to heavy rainfall, a yellow warning for wind is in effect for Madeira’s south coast and mountainous regions from 18:00 on December 31 until 09:00 on January 1. Winds of up to 80 km/h are anticipated as Storm Francis passes through the area. Residents have been advised to take precautions, particularly in wooded areas where falling branches or trees may pose a risk.
Civil Protection Urges Safety Measures for Residents and Visitors
Regional Civil Protection Services have recommended several safety measures to reduce hazards during the storm. Citizens are encouraged to clean and unclog drainage systems, secure loose structures, and avoid remaining in vulnerable locations. Authorities also advised limiting travel and staying away from potentially affected areas. The council continues to coordinate with regional and municipal services to monitor the situation and respond if conditions worsen.
