All Hiking Trails Closed Sunday as Storm Approaches

Regional authorities close all classified hiking paths on November 8 as depression Bruna brings wind gusts to 130 km/h.

All classified hiking trails across Madeira will be closed on Sunday, November 8, following a weather warning from the national meteorological institute. Depression Bruna is expected to bring strong rain and dangerous wind.

The closure affects every hiking path in the region. It also includes the forest road connecting Eira do Serrado to Pico do Areeiro, the highest point in Madeira. Authorities urge people to follow civil protection guidance and avoid outdoor activities that day.

Wind Gusts to 130 km/h in Mountain Areas

Depression Bruna will bring dangerous winds to Madeira. In mountain regions, gusts reach 130 km/h. Coastal areas will see lower speeds, with gusts up to 100 km/h.

The storm also brings heavy rain and thunderstorms. Rainfall is expected to be persistent and sometimes intense. These conditions make hiking and outdoor sports extremely hazardous.

Orange Alert for Saturday and Sunday

The national meteorological institute (IPMA) issued an orange alert for rain and wind. The alert covers Saturday through Sunday, November 7-8. Orange is the second-highest alert level, indicating significant danger.

The alert affects the entire Madeira region. It warns of the combined threats from both rain and wind, which together create the most dangerous conditions for outdoor activity.

Forest Road to Areeiro Peak Also Closed

The forest road connecting Eira do Serrado to Pico do Areeiro is included in the closure. This road, used by hikers and tourists visiting Madeira's highest point, will not be accessible on Sunday.

The Instituto das Florestas e Conservação da Natureza (IFCN) made this decision to protect public safety during the storm.

Authorities Warn Against Outdoor Activities

Regional authorities recommend avoiding all outdoor leisure and sports activities in forest areas on Sunday. The IFCN specifically urges people to follow civil protection authority guidance.

The warning emphasizes the risk posed by the combination of extreme winds, heavy rain and potential flooding. Hiking, trail running, climbing and other outdoor pursuits should be postponed until weather improves.
