Teen Asks Politicians How Young People Will Afford Homes

A 16-year-old at an autonomy event raised housing affordability as his generation's biggest worry.

The Question

Simão Andrade, a 16-year-old student, took the stage at a political forum. He asked a direct question: how will his generation afford homes like their parents did? The forum, held in Ribeira Brava, is part of "Parliament in the Community" sessions that mark Madeira's 50 years of autonomy.

Andrade acknowledged Madeira's achievements over five decades. But he said rising prices are worrying him and his peers. The island's economic growth has not translated into affordable housing for young people searching for their first homes.

"How will we be able to get a house like our parents?"

What Comes Next

The teenager said young people must be heard on decisions that shape their futures. He stressed the importance of feeling that their voices matter. With housing costs climbing and salaries unchanged, many young Madeirans are asking whether staying on the island is even possible or whether they must leave to find affordable homes.

The session is part of the anniversary celebrations, streamed live on local media platforms.
