Horários do Funchal Again Extends Use of Old GIRO Passes

It ain't over, until its over! Old Giro Bus passes remain valid until February 2026 - provided that this will be the last extension.

Old GIRO Passes and Tickets Valid Until 28 February 2026

Horários do Funchal (HF), Madeira’s main public bus operator, has again announced that passengers can continue using their old GIRO bus passes and tickets longer, that is until 28 February 2026. According to information published on the company’s official website, this extension applies to the pre-purchased journeys still loaded on HF’s urban network cards.

The company explained that this measure is temporary and linked to the upcoming integration with the SIGA ticketing system, which is supposed to replace the existing HF platform.

Top-Ups Available Only at Payshop Agents Until Further Notice

HF clarified that pre-purchased ride top-ups for the old GIRO system are only available at Payshop agents. Passengers will not be able to reload trips at HF service desks or automatic machines. The sale and use of these tickets will stop once the new SIGA pre-purchase system comes into effect, which could happen before the February 2026 deadline.

For passengers buying a GIRO card for the first time, the card itself costs €0.50, and the fares for each trip depend on the number of journeys purchased.

Current Journey Prices Range from €1.25 to €1.35 Per Trip

The fare system remains unchanged:

  • From 2 to 9 trips, each journey costs €1.35.

  • From 10 to 31 trips, each journey costs €1.25.

These trips can be used only within the HF urban network and validated on the older ticket validators still in operation. The company underlined that “there will be no refund of amounts in any situation,” urging passengers to plan their usage carefully before the deadline.

Customers Advised to Use Remaining Credits Before Deadline

Horários do Funchal has reminded users that all remaining credits must be used by 28 February 2026, but this deadline has been extended about half a dozen times. Passengers are recommended to keep track of their remaining trips and avoid loading more than they can use before the cut-off date.
