Portugal's appeal to tourists is growing, with the average stay increasing from 3.5 days in February 2020 to 6.1 days by March 2024. When it comes to main destination search trends, Madeira is a favorite with Germans, followed by people from Switzerland who are inquiring about Madeira the most.
Portugal is the second European country in which tourists stay longer. The number of days spent in Portugal went from 3.5 days in February 2020 (before the pandemic), to 6.1 days by March 2024.
Increase In Air Traffic: Portugal In Top 3
Portugal also saw an 8% increase in air traffic compared to 2019, placing it third in Europe, ahead of Spain at 6.6%. Globally, Portugal ranks 8th, surpassing France (26th) or Germany (35th).
Travel Trends 2024
The data comes from the latest global report Travel Trends 2024 from the Mastercard Economics Institute. Trends from June to August this year reveal Lisbon as a top destination for people from Spain, followed by French, and British.
