International Travel Drives Growth as Occupancy Rate Falls
Christiano Ronaldo Airport recorded a strong increase in traffic this May compared to the same month last year. According to data from ANA – Airports of Portugal and Madeira’s regional statistics office (DREM), both international and domestic flights contributed to this rise, though the growth was led mainly by international travel.

Madeira Airport handled nearly all the region’s air traffic, while Porto Santo saw a small decline in both flights and passengers.

Domestic passengers: 223,300 (+4.1%)
At Madeira Airport:
International travel made up 58.4% of traffic
Domestic travel made up 41.6%
At Porto Santo Airport:
Domestic flights dominated with 86.8%, more than the 78% recorded a year earlier
Seat Occupancy Rate Decreases
Average passengers per flight:
Madeira: 152 (down from 156 in May 2024)
Porto Santo: 92 (slightly up from 91)
Seat occupancy:
Madeira Airport: 86.0% (down from 89.8%)
Porto Santo: 79.2% (up from 77.9%)
Combined RAM airports: 85.7% (down from 89.0%)
Aircraft were a little less full this year overall, especially at Madeira Airport, even though more people flew.

Regular scheduled flights made up 94.2% of all aircraft and 96.4% of all passengers, slightly higher than last year.
