Madeira Considers Emergency Aid for Farmers After Storm Emília

The government is reviewing whether farmers affected by Storm Emília qualify for emergency financial support after widespread damage.

The Regional Government of Madeira has instructed the Secretariat for Agriculture and Fisheries to continue assessing damage caused to farmers by Storm Emília.

In a statement, the executive said the assessment will measure the economic impact of the storm and, if needed, prepare the legal steps for possible extraordinary financial support. The aim is to reduce financial losses among affected farmers.

Any Financial Support Depends On Later Approval Of Formal Rules

The government said any aid would require a specific regulation. The Agriculture and Fisheries Secretariat was asked to submit this proposal for approval once the damage assessment is complete.

Civil Protection Logs 353 Incidents And One Rehousing Case

The Regional Civil Protection Service recorded 353 incidents across the archipelago during the storm. The most serious case involved the rehousing of one person in Santa Cruz due to housing damage. “No other victims were recorded as a result of the reported incidents,” the authority said.

Winds Of 147 Kilometers Per Hour Recorded On April 12

Storm Emília brought strong winds, heavy rain, rough seas and snowfall in higher areas. The strongest wind gust reached 147 kilometers per hour high up at the Chão do Areeiro station on April 12.
