Cinema Closes Permanently on June 30
The cinema at Madeira Shopping will stop operating on June 30, ending more than 20 years of movie screenings at the mall. Since the shopping center opened in 2001, its seven cinema screens have entertained local audiences. For nearly ten years, the Cineplace brand managed the cinema, but it has now reached an agreement with the mall's owner, Sonae Sierra, to end its operation.
Plans for the Space After Closure
Sonae Sierra confirmed the closure in a statement to Antena 1 and said the area will soon undergo changes. The company plans to renovate and change how the space is used, aiming to improve the overall experience in that part of the mall. After the cinema closes, Sonae Sierra will review different options for making better use of the available space.
Declining Cinema Attendance in Madeira
The decision to close comes at a time when cinema attendance has been falling. Recent statistics from the first three months of this year show a drop of nearly 10 percent in the number of moviegoers, a 6.5 percent fall in the number of screenings, and a 4.1 percent decrease in box office revenue. These figures reflect a broader trend affecting cinema businesses.
Impact on Madeira’s Cinema Scene
With the closing of the Cineplace cinema, Madeira will lose half of its cinema screens. The only remaining option for movie lovers on the island will be the NOS cinema located at Fórum Madeira. This change could affect how people in Madeira access films and entertainment in the future.
