Increase of 19.2% in Foreign Residents from 2022
The number of foreign residents in Madeira reached a record 14,060 as of December 31, 2023. This marks a 19.2% increase from 2022, with 2,267 more people choosing to live in the region compared to the previous year. Foreign nationals now represent 5.5% of Madeira’s total population of 256,622 residents.
Brazilian Community Sees the Largest Growth
Among the top five foreign residents in Madeira are:
🇻🇪 Venezuelans (15,5%)
🇬🇧 British (10,3%)
🇧🇷 Brazilians (10,3%)
🇩🇪 Germans (10,0%)
🇮🇹 Italians (5,2%)
the Brazilian community saw the most significant growth. The number of Brazilian residents increased by 34.3%, from 1,080 in 2022 to 1,450 in 2023, contributing 3.1 percentage points to the overall increase in foreign residents. Meanwhile, the Venezuelan community experienced a 6.1% decline, with their numbers dropping from 2,323 to 2,182.
Funchal Hosts Over 50% of Foreign Residents
Funchal remains the primary destination for foreign nationals in Madeira, with 52.6% of the foreign population residing in the city. Santa Cruz and Calheta follow, with 13.0% and 9.4%, respectively.
Slightly More Men Than Women
In terms of gender distribution, the foreign population is slightly more male (50.9%) than female (49.1%). Calheta, Porto Santo, and Ponta do Sol have the highest proportion of foreign residents relative to their total populations, with foreign nationals comprising up to 11.9% of Calheta's residents.
