Mega Bolo-Rei Event Moves From Praça da Autonomia to Municipal Market
The annual Mega Bolo-Rei event in Câmara de Lobos will take place this tomorrow at 11:00 in the town’s Municipal Market. The change of location was announced on Friday by the Câmara Municipal de Câmara de Lobos, after weather forecasts raised concerns about weather conditions. The event had been planned for Praça da Autonomia.
Officials stressed that the change affects only the venue. The timing, programme, and public access remain the same. The municipality also asked residents for understanding and encouraged them to attend despite the last-minute adjustment.
180-Metre Cake and 250 Kilos of Tradition Remain Unchanged
According to the municipality, all other elements of the event will stay in place. This includes the free distribution of the traditional Mega Bolo-Rei, measuring about 180 metres in length and weighing around 250 kilos. The customary ginja liqueur, served in chocolate cups, will also be offered to the public.
The Mega Bolo-Rei event is a public celebration organised by the Câmara Municipal de Câmara de Lobos as part of its official Christmas and New Year festivities. The initiative aims to bring residents together around a shared tradition, offering the cake free of charge

Growth Over Time: The event has grown significantly. By 2025 (the 9th edition), the cake reached a massive 180 meters in length and weighed roughly 265 kilograms.
The Hiatus: There was a two-year break in the tradition due to the COVID-19 pandemic (2021 and 2022), but it was successfully resumed in 2023.
