“Men of the Sea” Artwork Pays Tribute to Maritime Heritage
A vibrant new street art mural celebrating the fishermen of Câmara de Lobos was unveiled today at the entrance of the town center. Created by urban artist Styler, the piece honors the “Men of the Sea” and portrays traditional fishing scenes, including the iconic xavelha boat, Atlantic waves, and the black scabbardfish.

The project was led by the cultural association Teatro Metaphora and supported by Madeira’s Regional Directorate of Culture. According to the association, the mural "celebrates the strength, tradition, and beauty of the region’s maritime heritage."
Cultural Leaders Praise Collaboration
The inauguration was attended by local officials, project partners, and Madeira’s Secretary for Tourism, Environment, and Culture, Eduardo Jesus. He praised Câmara de Lobos for its cultural energy and highlighted the unique social mission of Teatro Metaphora. José António Barros, representing the Regional Directorate of Culture, emphasized the importance of financial and institutional support in bringing the project to life.
“This Mural Is Ours, Yours, and Everyone’s”
Teatro Metaphora’s president thanked the municipal council for its ongoing support. “This mural is ours, yours, and everyone’s,” he told attendees, underlining the project’s community focus. Local officials echoed that sentiment, noting that public art can bring people together and reflect shared identity. The mural joins a growing collection of public artworks the association has created across Madeira.
More Street Art on the Horizon?
During the event, Mayor Sónia Pereira challenged Teatro Metaphora to bring similar murals to other parishes in the municipality - Quinta Grande, Curral das Freiras, and Jardim da Serra. Could more towns follow Câmara de Lobos in using public art to honor local stories? The mural may depict the past, but its message looks toward the future of cultural expression in public spaces.
