Officials Meet at 19:00 on Possible New Year’s Eve Cancellation

With the possibility of a red weather alert - the highest level for heavy rain - authorities have called a meeting at Quinta Vigia, broadcast live on RTP Madeira from 19:00, to decide whether New Year’s celebrations will be canceled.

Authorities are reviewing several scenarios for the traditional fireworks show, which usually takes place at midnight. Due to concerns about heavy rain and strong winds, the show could start earlier or be postponed. Any decision will depend on updated weather data closer to the night - officials said public safety will guide the final call.

IPMA Considers Red Rain Alert After 00:00; Orange Warning Now Active

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere said conditions may worsen after 00:00, with the chance of a red alert for heavy rain. For now, an orange rain warning is in place between 00:00 and 09:00. Ricardo Tavares, the IPMA delegate in Madeira, said, “at this moment only an orange warning has been issued.” His comment aimed to calm concerns while stressing that the situation remains under close review.

Yellow Alerts Begin at 18:00 on Dec. 31 Across Madeira, Porto Santo

A yellow warning for rain and strong winds takes effect from 18:00 on December 31. Another yellow alert covers thunderstorms from 00:00 to 09:00. On the north coast and in Porto Santo, warnings for rain and wind remain at the yellow level. On the south coast and in mountainous areas, the orange rain warning also applies - a sign of higher risk in those zones as the New Year begins.
