Porto Santo Starts €6.1 Million Public Tender for 2nd Golf Course

Porto Santo has launched a €6.1 million public tender for the first phase of its second course.

Public Tender Launched for First Phase as Construction Set to Take 13 Months

The Sociedade de Desenvolvimento do Porto Santo has launched the public tender for the first phase of a new golf course on the island. The contract is valued at €6.1 million, excluding VAT, and will receive funding from the European Union, according to sources. The execution period of this first phase is scheduled to take 13 months.

25 Million Public Investment: Porto Santo Already Hosts One Golf Course Since 2004

The island currently has one golf course, built in 2003 and inaugurated in 2004 with a public investment of €25 million. This course has played a significant role in tourism and sports development over the past two decades.

Visitor Numbers Grew Over 18% in 2023 to 33,900 Rounds

According to SDPS data, the Porto Santo golf course closed 2022 with 28,544 rounds, 83% of which were linked to air travel from Denmark. In 2023, the course saw an 18% increase, reaching a record 33,900 rounds played.

Madeira Archipelago Expands Golf Infrastructure With Additional Projects

Besides Porto Santo, the archipelago has two golf courses on Madeira island. A new facility is currently under construction in Ponta do Pargo, Calheta, reflecting continued investment in sports infrastructure in the region. Furthermore, as announced by President Miguel Albuquerque, two additional golf courses may be developed at some point in the future.

  • Porto Santo Golfe (Porto Santo) - operational 18-hole course designed by Seve Ballesteros; a 9-hole pitch-and-putt also exists.

  • Palheiro Golf (Madeira Island) - 18 holes overlooking Funchal; operational since 1993.

Golf Course In Development

  • Ponta do Pargo Golf (Madeira Island) - designed by Sir Nick Faldo; under construction, with regional authorities confirming a €12 million investment and expected completion around 2026.

Planned / Under Study

  • Ribeira do Faial (Madeira Island) - identified by President Miguel Albuquerque as the next potential project; feasibility study would be next.

  • Ribeira de São Jorge (Madeira Island) - mentioned by Miguel Albuquerque and former vice-president Miguel de Sousa as a future possibility, but not yet planned.
