Ponta do Pargo Course Near Completion as Government Considers Ribeira do Faial Project
Madeira’s President Miguel Albuquerque announced he wants two more golf courses, in addition to the one already being built, in Madeira. Together with the existing golf course in Porto Santo, the archipelago would then have 6 golf courses. In an interview with RTP Madeira, President Miguel Albuquerque confirmed that a study is underway to evaluate a possible new site in Ribeira do Faial, on the island’s north coast.
At the moment, as you know, we are finalizing the Ponta do Pargo course, which is an exceptional course (…) But I have no doubt that Madeira needs another one to become a top golf destination, with very important effects on our economy

The President added that a decision on the new project would be made after the local elections, signaling that golf development remains a government priority beyond the current term.
Former Vice President Miguel de Sousa Backs Two New Golf Courses
The discussion gained attention after former Vice President Miguel de Sousa (PSD Madeira) defended the creation of new golf facilities in an opinion piece published in Diário de NotĂcias on October 8. De Sousa highlighted Ribeira do Faial and Ribeira de SĂŁo Jorge as potential locations for future courses, arguing that such developments would strengthen Madeira’s tourism sector.
Albuquerque acknowledged De Sousa’s early involvement in the Faial project, saying the area “is one we are considering.” When asked about São Jorge, the President responded:
Let’s finish this one, move on to the fourth, and then we’ll think about the fifth.
