Portugal Sees 40+ Domestic Violence Cases a Day

Surveillance Footage Brings Machico Case Into Public View

The Public Security Police (PSP) registered 297 cases of domestic violence across Portugal between August 23 and 29, according to data released this week. Five suspects were arrested during that period.

One of the incidents, in Machico drew national attention after video footage of the assaults was shared widely on social media. The images, recorded by security cameras inside the victim’s home, showed a 35-year-old man attacking his partner in front of their 9-year-old child. Following his first court hearing, the suspect was placed in pre-trial detention.

Regional Government Reacts to Madeira Incident

The case prompted a strong reaction from regional authorities. Paula Margarido, Regional Secretary for Inclusion, Youth and Labor in Madeira, said she was “deeply shocked” by the images. She added that “all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the protection and support of the victim and her family.”
