Unstable Weather Affects Northern European Airports
Recent days of strong winds have caused serious disruptions at Madeira Airports. Passengers have faced delays and cancellations, especially at busy hubs affected by unstable wind conditions.
President Miguel Albuquerque addressed the situation:
Two or three days is enough for us to have problems, but obviously people also, as they already know - or at least already have access to privileged information from a meteorological point of view - they already know that when they are traveling in these unstable wind conditions, they are subject to disruptions. The same thing always happens at airports in Northern Europe, where there are similar situations.
He also thanked passengers for their patience and cooperation:
So, what I can say at this moment is to thank our passengers for their patience and also to thank the way we have tried to resolve the situation.
Outdated Safety Limits Under Review
The head of government stressed the importance of updating wind limits for airport operations. He recalled current efforts to review the matter:
We know, from the point of view of technological evolution of the aircraft themselves, that the limits were set in 1960 and 1962, using aircraft that have little in common with those of today
He added:
So, the idea is to analyze this and then make a technically appropriate adaptation, done by specialists, to ensure whether these currently established limits are or are not outdated
A Commission Will Study the Problem
The government is creating a commission to establish a regional framework to ensure full safety:
The commission will be created to make a region in a framework that guarantees full safety.
