Residents to Enjoy Free Access to Botanical Garden

Trade-off? After announcing that residents will need to reserve timeslots for 42 hiking trails from 2026, authorities have now revealed that residents will enjoy free access to the Madeira Botanical Garden.

Residents of Madeira Have Free Access to Jardim Botânico da Madeira From 2026

From 2026, residents of Madeira will have free access to the Madeira Botanical Garden. The regional government says the measure aims to give local people easier access to the island’s natural heritage while keeping paid entry for non-residents. Currently and until the end of 2025, both tourists and residents are being charged €10 entry fee.

Portaria n.Âş 801/2025 of 10 December Changes Fee Rules

The decision follows a change to the regulation that sets fees charged by the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation, under Portaria n.º 801/2025 of 10 December. Eduardo Jesus, the regional secretary for Tourism, Environment and Culture, described the move as “a conscious and structured political choice” and that:

Guaranteeing free access to all Madeirans is affirming that sustainability begins with the people who live here.

Jesus added that charging visitors from outside the region follows the user-pays principle, saying that:

Those who benefit from the Region's natural capital should contribute to its conservation.

Programme UPGRADE Connects Garden Access to Wider Tourism Management

The policy forms part of the regional government’s Programme UPGRADE, which links tourism, environment, and culture. Under the same approach, a reservation system will begin in 2026 for Madeira’s 42 classified walking trails, with limits on access and payment required for non-residents, while residents are required to book time slots.
