New Dual-Expressway Plan Announced
The Madeira Regional Government has confirmed plans to redesign the main road connecting Ribeira Brava, Ponta do Sol, and Calheta. Regional Secretary for Equipment and Infrastructure Pedro Rodrigues announced that the new road will duplicate the existing expressway, creating two lanes in each direction.
According to Rodrigues, current traffic levels already “clearly justify” the project. During the summer, congestion along the coastal road between Ribeira Brava and Tábua has become a daily challenge.
Two-Phase Construction Starting With Ribeira Brava – Ponta do Sol Section
The duplication of the expressway will be done in two stages. The first phase will extend from Ribeira Brava to Ponta do Sol, followed by the section reaching Calheta. The route will run along a new alignment designed to improve safety, capacity, and traffic flow.
Pedro Rodrigues said the preliminary study for the project will begin immediately, with the aim of defining a technical solution by the end of 2026. This study will also include estimated costs and detailed route options.
Road Upgrades to Support West Madeira’s Growth and Tourism
The regional government expects the western part of the island to see new hotel and housing developments in the coming years. Rodrigues explained that this growth increases the need for better access and higher road capacity.
The government emphasized that the new concession will follow the same principle as current agreements: all structural roads will remain toll-free. “It will be a free circulation model,” Rodrigues said, confirming that drivers will not pay to use the upgraded road network.
