Powerful Protest Today in Funchal

"Stop Corruption Freedom Madeira Now", is the message on a man's shirt who climbed a statue by António Duarte (1912 - 1998) in front of the Justice Palace in Funchal. He blindfolded the statue's eyes and stood on top of its sword. People passing by took pictures and asked what was happening and what this is all about. When the police came, the man did not resist and got off the statue.

Legit & Strong Form of Protest

Without knowing the protester’s intentions and as much as the Madeiran culture is unique and incredible, those peaceful but weighty actions of protest do seem meaningful and a way of putting pressure on the executive power of a society. More of this suits the Portuguese culture. It is a way for the sovereign to remind ourselves that any government is of the people, by the people & for the people.
