Fourth Sea-Related Death Reported in Madeira Since August 2025

This incident is the fourth sea-related death recorded in Madeira since August, including both drownings and sudden medical emergencies. Two of those occurred during the bathing season.

One fatality was reported at Praia Formosa on August 26. A drowning was also registered on September 12 at Ponta do Passo, in Porto Santo, in an unguarded maritime area.

The man’s death closely follows another tragedy happened yesterday, when an Irish tourist died at Praia da Maiata while trying to rescue his daughter.

Local authorities have noted the recurring incidents, particularly in areas with strong currents and fluctuating sea conditions.

We urge everyone to be very careful along the coast and when visiting beaches. We are entering winter, and the sea begins to gain more energy. We no longer have the calm, gentle sea of summer, and with the depressions moving across the Atlantic, that energy reaches the coast with greater intensity.
