Two tourists set up a makeshift camp on a pedestrian path at Madeira Airport, near the entrance to the terminal. They used road signs to hang two hammocks, the newspaper JM reported.
A reader sent JM a photo of the scene. JM described the situation as unusual and said it raises questions about the behaviour of some visitors in public spaces.
Hammocks Tied to Road Signs on the Morning of 4 November
The episode took place on Wednesday morning, 4 November, at the airport, one of the main gateways to Madeira. According to reports, it lasted for some time, JM wrote.
The two tourists, who JM said appeared to be foreign, turned an area meant for pedestrians into a place to rest.
They used the vertical road signs to put up the two hammocks, creating a kind of open-air "tent". Their bags were placed next to them.
Two Visitors Watched by Passing Tourists and Drivers at the Terminal
The scene did not go unnoticed. Other tourists walking nearby watched with smiles, as did several drivers who passed by, according to JM. The newspaper did not report any intervention by the airport, the police or other authorities.
