31-Year-Old Igor Holewiński Found Dead in Santana Today
Igor Holewiński, the 31-year-old tourist from Poland who had been missing for a week, was found dead this Sunday, November 9, 2025, on the island of Madeira. According to information reported by Diário de Notícias Madeira, the body was discovered in a hard-to-reach area near Ribeira Grande, in the Faias area of Santana.
A Madeiran guide taking part in the search located the body. He was working alongside a private rescue team hired by the victim’s friends and family. The Public Security Police (PSP) have been called to the scene.
Private Rescue Team Joined the Search and Located the Body
Throughout the week, several official teams took part in the search operation: the PSP Search and Rescue Team, members of the National Republican Guard (GNR), the Regional Civil Protection Service, the Forestry Police, and the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN).
Despite these ongoing efforts, it was the private rescue team - brought in by Holewiński’s relatives - that found the body. They arrived in Madeira on Friday, November 8, and began searching on Saturday. The discovery was made the following afternoon.
Igor Holewiński Likely Suffered a Fall
Holewiński told his family last Sunday that he planned to go for a walk to Pico Ruivo, the highest peak in Madeira. The last signal from his mobile phone was detected near the tunnel of Levada dos Tornos. The location where his body was found, in the Faias area of Santana, is known to be steep and difficult to access.
Authorities believe he suffered a fall.
Police Units Continue Work at the Scene in Santana
The Public Security Police have mobilized resources to the site of the discovery to support the ongoing operation. The area’s difficult terrain has complicated access for rescue workers. Officials have not yet released further details, and an investigation should determine the exact circumstances of the death.
Igor’s family and friends will be heartbroken by this tragic news, but they may find some comfort in finally knowing what happened to him.
