The Regional Civil Protection Service (SRPC) announced that all classified hiking trails in Madeira will be closed on Thursday, January 1, 2026. The closure follows weather warnings predicting heavy rain and strong winds linked to the passage of Storm Francis. Authorities advised hikers to avoid outdoor activities and to respect all restrictions.

Eira do Serrado to Pico do Areeiro Road Closed Overnight from December 31 to January 1

The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) confirmed that the road connecting Eira do Serrado to Pico do Areeiro will be closed from 20:00 on December 31 until 08:00 on January 1. The measure is based on meteorological alerts issued by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA). Officials highlighted the risk of falling trees and hazardous conditions in mountainous areas.

Civil Protection Warns of Winds Up to 80 km/h and Risk in Exposed Areas

Authorities reminded the public to adopt safety measures during the storm, especially as winds are expected to reach speeds of up to 80 km/h. A spokesperson from SRPC said people should follow all instructions and temporary restrictions issued by the authorities. They also advised residents and visitors to avoid staying in exposed or forested areas.
