Via Rápida Carries 40,500 Vehicles a Day Through September

Traffic on Madeira's Via Rápida rose 1.4% in the first nine months of 2026, but growth stalled between July and September.

Madeira's Via Rápida carried an average of 40,500 vehicles a day between January and September 2026. The island's express roads, the Vias Expresso, carried 8,200 a day.

The figures come from the Regional Roads Directorate (DRE). They were released on Wednesday.

Traffic Still Growing

Traffic on the Via Rápida rose 1.4% year on year, compared with the same period of 2025. On the express roads, the article gives growth of 2.1% in one passage and 2.6% in another.

Cars and other light vehicles drove most of the increase. Their traffic grew 1.4% on the Via Rápida and 2.6% on the express roads.

Heavy vehicles also rose, by 1.8% and 2.1%. But they make up only about 2% of all traffic, so their effect on the total is small.

Growth Slows in Summer

The third quarter shows a clear slowdown. Between July and September, traffic on the Via Rápida stayed flat. On the express roads it rose just 0.7%.

That is a change from the second quarter. Then, traffic grew 1.7% on the Via Rápida and 2.6% on the express roads.

The article says this points to less momentum on both concession road networks. It does not give a reason for the slowdown.
