Lobo Marinho Conservation: A Success Story in Madeira
Conservation efforts for the critically endangered Lobo Marinho began in the Madeira Archipelago in 1988. Initial estimates placed the population at a mere 6-8 individuals. However, thanks to dedicated conservation work, a new survey methodology in 2019 revealed a more positive outlook, with a count of 21 individuals based on data from 6 years ago. This year alone, there have been over 130 sightings of Lobo Marinhos, 25 in Funchal and even more in the Caniçal area.
