Twelve Fatalities Reported Across Madeira Roads This Year
Twelve people have died on Madeira’s roads this year, based on confirmed accident reports across the island. The deaths involve drivers, passengers, motorcyclists, a cyclist and victims of falling rocks.
The incidents occurred in several municipalities, from Funchal and Ribeira Brava to Calheta, Santana and Machico, involving both residents and visitors. The victims range in age from 19 to over 80. Some died at the scene, while others later died in hospital due to serious injuries.
January and March Included Fatal Crashes in Ponta do Sol and Machico Tunnel
The first fatal accident of the year occurred in January, when a 19-year-old woman from Funchal died after a crash on the straight section of the Paul da Serra road, near the crossing in Canhas, Ponta do Sol.
Also in January, a man died at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça following a road collision in Ribeira Brava.
In March, a 26-year-old man died after his motorcycle left the road inside the tunnel connecting Caniçal and Machico on the expressway.
April Saw Three Fatal Incidents Including Two Caused by Falling Rocks
April recorded the highest number of deaths in a single month. A woman in her 70s died after being seriously injured in a violent crash at Rampa do Muro da Coelha, in São Roque.
Later that month, a Portuguese tourist aged between 40 and 50 died in Madalena do Mar, Ponta do Sol, after a falling rock hit the car he was traveling in.
In a separate case, a woman of about 70 died after a rock fell onto her vehicle in Paul do Mar, in the municipality of Calheta.
Summer and Autumn Accidents Included Cyclist Death and Santana Fatality
In May, a 30-year-old man died after being hit by a vehicle while riding a bicycle on Rua Dr. Pita, in São Martinho.
July brought a double fatality in Calheta, where two sisters aged between their 70s and 80s died after a vehicle left the road on Estrada Caminho Lombo do Salão.
In September, a woman died after a cabriolet left the road near the Ribeira de Alforra tunnel, in Câmara de Lobos.
Another fatal motorcycle accident claimed the life of a 22-year-old man on Via Expresso 4, linking Ribeira Brava and São Vicente.
Authorities also confirmed a fatal road accident in Santana, completing the total of twelve deaths recorded this year.
Of the twelve fatalities, two occurred on expressways, while others took place on local and regional roads across the island.
